Whispers of the Abandoned Bridge

In the heart of the bustling city, where the neon lights never sleep, there stood an old, decrepit bridge that the locals whispered about in hushed tones. The bridge was said to be cursed, a place where the spirits of the lost and forsaken wandered, never finding peace. It was a place to be avoided, a place to be forgotten.

The young couple, Li Wei and Mei Lin, were not the kind to be deterred by such legends. They were thrill-seekers, always on the lookout for an adventure that would make their hearts race and their minds race even faster. One weekend, as they were driving through the city, they stumbled upon the old bridge, its dark silhouette against the night sky.

"Let's go check it out," Li Wei said, his eyes gleaming with excitement.

Mei Lin hesitated but relented. "Alright, but if we hear anything strange, we're leaving."

They parked their car on the edge of the bridge and began to walk across it. The bridge was narrow, the wooden planks creaking ominously under their feet. The wind howled through the gaps, carrying with it the faint sound of whispers.

"Can you hear that?" Mei Lin asked, her voice trembling.

Li Wei nodded, his face pale. "It's just the wind, I think."

Whispers of the Abandoned Bridge

But the whispers grew louder, more insistent. They seemed to be calling their names, urging them to look behind them.

"Let's go," Mei Lin said, her voice barely above a whisper.

They turned and ran, but the whispers followed them, growing louder with each step. They reached the end of the bridge, but instead of stopping, they kept running, driven by a primal instinct to escape the clutches of the unseen.

As they sprinted, Li Wei's phone rang. He checked the screen, and his eyes widened in shock. It was an unknown number, but the caller ID showed a name: "Whispers of the Bridge."

"Hello?" Li Wei said, his voice trembling.

There was a moment of silence, and then a voice, chilling and sinister, spoke. "You're not getting away this time."

Li Wei's heart raced as he and Mei Lin continued to run. They didn't know where they were going, but they knew they had to keep moving. The whispers grew louder, and the bridge seemed to stretch out indefinitely, taunting them.

Finally, they reached a clearing, and there, standing before them, was an old woman with a face twisted in anger and sorrow. Her eyes were hollow, and her clothes were tattered and worn.

"Who are you?" Mei Lin asked, her voice steady despite the fear gripping her.

The old woman looked at them, her eyes filled with pain. "I am the spirit of those who died here. You have disturbed me, and now you must pay the price."

Li Wei and Mei Lin tried to run, but the old woman was too fast. She reached out and grabbed Mei Lin, pulling her towards her. Li Wei lunged forward, trying to save her, but the old woman's grip was unbreakable.

"No!" Mei Lin screamed, her eyes wide with terror.

Li Wei's hands found no hold in the old woman's form. He watched, helplessly, as Mei Lin was pulled into the spirit's embrace. The old woman turned her eyes on Li Wei, and a malicious smile spread across her face.

"Your time will come," she hissed, and with a final, despairing look, Li Wei watched as Mei Lin vanished into the night.

Li Wei fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face. He had failed her, failed them both. The old woman's laughter echoed in his ears, a sound that would haunt him for the rest of his days.

He stumbled to his feet and ran back to their car, his mind racing. He needed to find Mei Lin, needed to bring her back. But as he drove away from the bridge, he realized that the bridge had not been a place of legend, but a gateway to another world, a world where the dead walked and the living were forgotten.

And as he drove, the whispers of the bridge followed him, a constant reminder of the night he had lost Mei Lin to the spirits that haunted its dark and decrepit halls.
